Finnished Newspaper Evaluation

Evaluation of finished newspaper:

How well does it meet your original intentions?

Personally I think that the Newspaper has met all of my intentions, it provides a good revision resource for Media A2 students while also being interesting enough to keep them interested instead of passing it off as another useless piece of revision resource. I think that as the intention was to provide something that students could use for revision we could have done much better than we have, this is probably down to most of us writing an article about what we wanted to instead of focussing on the guidelines and creating something to help with the A2 exam.

How does it look?

Overall I think that the look of the Newspaper is pretty good, it looks professional and also it reads like a newspaper, there is much more that it could have had included but overall it works really well, I think that the colour scheme varies too much throughout though, it has a different colour for each page, I think that although this works well in places it is a bit over the top for some of the pages, for instance one thing that did annoy me is that after I spent a lot of time working on putting together a nice background image for my article the editors at Media Magazine changed it to their own ideas without consulting us; or at least they hadn't consulted us to my own personal knowledge.

How pleased are you with your contributions?

I think that my contribution to the magazine were pretty good in terms of what I could do in my role, I wrote my own article, worked with Ash to combine the two articles and also worked on the layout of the front page which wasn't used in the end although I am currently unaware as to why it was not used, I think that you can see the similarity between my design and the finished design.

How effectively do you think you worked in your role and others worked in theirs?

I think that in my role I managed to work really well, In terms of providing the team with everything that I owed them in terms of my article and other work that they needed to submit to the panel I think that I did everything that I could to the best of my knowledge and ability, although I think that I could have done a lot better keeping evidence of each meeting, session with Dave and also any other evidence that I could have collected throughout the course of the project.

I personally think that everyone did a good job during the project, some people I think had a problem listening to instructions as I can remember telling others what they needed to do when they started off down the wrong route, on many occasions people have not been doing as they were supposed to and roles started to cross over towards the end. The teams (Red, Blue and Gold) all worked really well together each team managed to produce all the articles and designs that they needed to use as and when they were scheduled to do it.

What could be learned from this experience?

Personally I think that a lot can be learnt from this experience, working in groups, sticking to a deadline, going out and getting people to pay for advertising space, selling all of the copies to various schools and establishments, all of this is a very useful lesson to learn when it comes to putting something like this together in the future in our own time or as part of a bigger organisation.

What had been learnt from previous experience?

From previous class projects I can clearly see that the lessons learnt from them have reflected off in this project considerably, from the Show Unit where we learnt the importance of sticking to a deadline we were able to make sure that we managed to get the newspaper and all of its content done in time for it to go to print. Something that I can see that helped this project that was learnt from the interaction project was the importance of working in a team that you get along with, working with people that you do not like and enjoy working with even less is something that is always going to be a problem throughout any career, but with this project the teams were picked in a way that everyone was working with people that they like and could work with easily, this worked out really well for this project whereas it hasn't for other projects in the past such as both Interaction and Commission, and especially the Show Unit where we had some real trouble getting along with the groups that we were working in.

Here is a video showing the finished product.

Idea 1 for Article

My first idea for an article that I could write included writing an article about the technological advancements in the media industry, including physical advancements in technology like upgraded camera equipment, projectors, computers and more of the like, also the software and social advancements that have affected the media industry. Something that I wanted to add to this page was an activity like a crossword or a word search that would be related to the article that I had written.

Here is two pictures of possible layouts that I came up with for the article.

The first one is a simple professionally done and very plain:

The second is much more colourful:

Media Magazine Article

In the first visit that we made to the English and Media center in london, we were told about an opportunity to write an article for Media Magazine. As a class project we all wrote an article for the magazine and sent them in. There was a few of us that successfully wrote articles that met the specifications that Jenny Grahame wanted and were then published in the following issue of Media Magazine.

Here is a picture of my article that I wrote and had published:

I think that this kind of an article could be good for the newspaper that we are currently creating, one idea that I had was to talk about the idea of online gaming forums and communities and how they have evolved over recent times. I could talk about people creating online aliases for themselves and being able to become someone completely different online than they are in real life. This idea has in fact been used quite vividly in a new television series "Caprica" where people in the show can zone out into a virtual world with a full size avatar of themselves and they can become whoever they want to be. This idea is one that is starting to be used in online games everywhere, people 'role-playing' and becoming different people. This is one idea that I could elaborate on in an article that I could write for the newspaper.
